Of all the environmental health topics I've researched and written about, mold is the one that surprises people most — not because it's new information, but because of how consistently it gets overlooked.
Mold-related illness presents as a wide range of symptoms: fatigue, brain fog, respiratory issues, skin reactions, mood changes, sleep disruption. Because these symptoms overlap with so many other conditions, mold is rarely the first thing investigated.
The challenge is compounded by the fact that not all mold is visible. The most toxic varieties often grow inside walls, under flooring, or in HVAC systems — invisible to casual inspection, present in the air a family breathes every day.
What families need to know: if you or your children have a cluster of symptoms that resist conventional treatment, and you live in a building that has had any water damage — even minor, even years ago — mold is worth investigating. An ERMI test is a good starting point. The good news: with the right information and support, mold-related illness is addressable.
